What are your plans for Children’s Week?

What are your plans for Children’s Week?

Children’s Week (23 October to 31 October, 2021) is an annual event, celebrating the right of children to enjoy childhood.

It is also a time for children to demonstrate their talents, skills and abilities. This event calls us to consider those conditions in society which affect the lives and future of Australia’s children.

The Children’s Week National Theme for 2021 is based on UNCRC Article 15: Children have the right to choose their own friends and safely connect with others.

Thousands of children and their families around the country will be involved in activities during Children’s Week, thanks to the participation of schools, childcare centres, playgroups, libraries and cultural and community groups.

We encourage you to start planning your Children’s Week event now. Some activity ideas are:

Creative Day

Ask children to paint and draw something/ someone that is special. Display the artwork or mural in a community space. Celebrate children’s strengths, successes and links to the community.

Breakfast or Morning Tea

Invite parents, grandparents, guardians and/or special friends to join children for a healthy breakfast or morning tea to celebrate Children’s Week. Click here to learn more about the Biggest Recess event.

Sports Day

Hold a sports carnival or fun day (with fun activities like a three legged, egg and spoon and sack and field races) to encourage children to live active and healthy lives.

Build a Library

Encourage parents and children to bring a book from home to donate during Children’s Week. The books collected can later be lent to other children or given to children in need.

Good Deed Day

Encourage children to ‘think of others’ and do something nice for someone else.

More resources can be found on the Children’s Week Council of Australia website.
