Supporting child mental health in the face of severe disasters

Supporting child mental health in the face of severe disasters

We know that severe weather events and disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity across Australia, and the children, young people and families with increased vulnerabilities feel the impact most and need localised, child and family focused support to recovery.

Rural community services play a vital role in the preparedness and recovery post disaster, as we’ve heard from our TEI and Family Preservation service colleagues in the aftermath of the Northern NSW floods, Western NSW floods and the 2019 bush fires across NSW.

As a service, feeling confident in being able to support families recover is essential. The upcoming webinar hosted by the Australian Institute of Family Studies, “Supporting family and child mental health in the face of severe weather events”, will be a great session to hear best practice approaches to support for families in your community.
