National Reconciliation Week: “Now More Than Ever”

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared history and renew our commitment to the journey of reconciliation. This year’s theme, “Now More Than Ever,” serves as a powerful reminder that the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will—and must—continue.

A critical and practical step towards reconciliation is the appointment of a Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People. This essential step, announced by the Federal government earlier this year, aims to address the shocking overrepresentation of Indigenous children in out-of-home care, an issue that highlights the systemic inequalities within our society.

The Fams board has strongly endorsed this initiative, recognising it as a pivotal moment in the ongoing pursuit of justice and reconciliation.

Fams Deputy Chairperson, Melanie Andrews, affirms the importance of this move,

“The establishment of a national Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People is a critical appointment in protecting and promoting the rights, interests and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people. This is a necessary change to ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are supported to be safe and cared for by community.”
