$200 million in NSW child protection funding is a great step

Fams was pleased to hear the announcement this week about the NSW governments $200 million rescue package as a critical first step in addressing the chronic underfunding of the child protection system.

However, as our member organisations have pointed out, more needs to be done to prevent children going into out-of-home-care by investing in early intervention and prevention services across the continuum of child protection.

Acting CEO, Lauren Stracey called for the government to invest 25 per cent increase in funding to early intervention and prevention programs which focus on keeping families together and breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect.

“Historically we’ve seen NSW prioritise crisis-end services – and while extremely important, we need more effort at stopping kids entering the child protection system in the first place,” she said.
