In Conversation with Dr Kate da Costa, Alliance for Gambling Reform

Fams will be hosting a Conversation with Dr Kate da Costa from the Alliance for Gambling Reform on 2 November.

Dr Kate da Costa is the NSW Campaigner for the Alliance, focusing on poker machine reform.

At present, 75 per cent of the world’s poker machines are in Australia, and half of them are in NSW.

Every day, losses in NSW mount up to $18.9 million, or $6.7 billion a year.

According to a report released by WASH House, BetterBet4Blacktown and Alliance for Gambling Reform, many community workers are not aware of the extent of gambling harm in their local areas. They struggle to talk about gambling with their clients, especially since the topic is laden with stigma and shame.

Dr Kate da Costa’s work involves community organising and support, encouraging the formation of local groups, providing logistical support and helping develop campaigning capacity.

Her aim is to have dozens of councils adopt gambling impact policies, and have the state government bring in genuine reform measures.

Dr da Costa will join us online via Zoom on Tuesday 2 November, between 1.00pm and 2.00pm.

The discussion is part of our In Conversation With… series, where we hear from prominent change-makers about their work.
