Fams CEO, Susan Watson, was invited to the launch of Uniting’s new flagship Uniting Families Report.
Developed by the UNSW Social Policy Research Centre in collaboration with Uniting NSW.ACT, the report aims to delve into the realities of family life in Australia. It seeks to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of diversity in our communities and explore how this shapes our children and young people.
We know culturally informed early intervention is a priority to keep children safe and make families stronger.
Key points highlighted in the report reinforce this necessity for more inclusive supports.
- Child Care subsidies can be difficult to navigate for blended families.
- First Nations Families have family structures that are often not appropriately considered by government systems, and this contributes to problems like over-representation of Aboriginal children in out-of-home care.
- Families who have members that are caring for others are more likely to experience financial challenges.
Reports such as this affirm Fams’ commitment to acknowledge and advocate for the needs of all children and families. That’s why we:
- Continue to support AbSec’s call for the appointment of a Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People
- Remain active members of the Child and Family Supports Alliance NSW (CaFSA)
- Are dedicated to amplifying the diverse voices of the sector and their communities
