This National Close the Gap Day, the message to government must be loud and clear.
First Nations people know how to close the gap.
The reality is that progress has been slow, and new data reveals child protection, incarceration and suicide rates getting worse. We need big changes in the systems that keep the gap wide open and First Nations communities must be resourced appropriately to achieve this.
This Close the Gap Day,
- We continue to call on the NSW Government to invest in ACCOs and ensure that a proportionate share of all new funding is allocated to ACCOs in line with the Closing the Gap targets.
- We reaffirm our commitment to standing with our partners at AbSec in advocating for the establishment of a NSW Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People.
When it comes to closing the gap, the evidence is clear. Accountability to community and self-determination must be at the core of all decisions.
It’s time for political will to reflect this commitment.
